Watch Out for Valentine’s Day Computer Virus
admin on February 13th, 2009
With Valentine’s Day rapidly approaching malware vendors and hackers are hard at work trying to find a way to exploit unsuspecting internet users.
Texas Tech’s IT department is warning about a new computer virus that poses as a Valentine’s Day e-card, delivered through e-mail. The scam e-mail includes a link that directs you to the location of the greeting. If you click on the link, the virus is downloaded and installed on your computer. Once in your system, your computer becomes the host to spread the virus to other computers through e-mail.
Experts said that the best defense is to simply delete the message, immediately.
Virus writers are notorious for launching attacks around major holidays like Christmas, New Year’s and Valentine’s Day. The infamous Storm Worm struck millions of Internet users’ systems in February 2008 with the lure of receiving a Valentine’s Day gift. The e-mail message contained a Web link which directed users to a Web site where they could supposedly download a Valentine’s card. Instead of receiving a card from a loved one, their system was infected with the Storm Worm and their personal information was stolen.
